Vectoring
I bring you this tutorial upon request...and its my first, so be nice ;__;. I'll be going over basic steps of vectoring an image. Why vector? Well, a good amount of times, there'll be great pictures with evil TEXT all over it [booo!] vectoring gets rid of the tezt. Its also used to recolor/reconstruct a bad scan.
Step one: pick an image/line work.
I'll be useing an image of Pleinair of Disgaea
Open the image in photoshop and double click the layer.
You'll get a pop up asking you to rename the layer, layer 0 is fine.
Now, create a new layer ABOVE your original image.
Fill this layer with white, and set it to 'invisible' [see about image, the little 'eye' is gone, showing that the layer is invisible]
Create another layer ABOVE the white layer, name it "lines". Now, grab your pen tool and have it to the setting outlined in red:
Zoom into your image and start going around a line in the image like so:
Close the path. Right click on it and hit "FILL PATH". Hit ok, then hit your delete button
You should now have this:
You'll notice that part of the image is cut off.
Dont panic! Just MAKE IT UP. Make lines that you think look right. This is what I did:
Now, just keep going until you've done all the line work. If you turn the white layer back on, your image should look like this:
Step 2: coloring pt. 1
Make a layer ABOVE the invisible white layer, but BELOW the 'lines' layer. Name this layer shadows/highlights. Use your eyedropper tool to pick up one of the images shadows. Go around the entire shadow, much like you did the lines.
Do the same, right click, "fill path", ok, delete. Do this to all the shadows/ highlights you have on your image. If you turn back on the white layer, you should have something like this:
Step 3: coloring pt. 2
Ok, now we need to make another layer ABOVE the white layer and BELOW both the 'lines' layer AND the 'shadows/highlights' layer. Name this layer "Base colors". Again, get the eye dropper tool and pick up colors, using the pen tool to outline all the 'base' colors. Again, right click, 'fill path', ok, delete. Once done, you should have something like this:
Just turn on the white layer [make sure there isnt any spots you missed], crop it if you need to, and save it.
Hope you enjoyed my tut!
If you want an image with just colors, then skip the 'lines' layer, just do steps 2 and 3. ALSO, you dont need to have a million layer, but you MUST have at least 5:
image, white, lines, shadows/highlights, basic colors. Shadows and highlights can be seperate layers. You need these layers so that you dont accidently remove some of a line or highlight, and it makes vectoring MUCH easier
